What song should we sing? (2012)
Coming home tired, I admit I was going through the motions.
Creeping the door open, I’m the juvenile-selfish in my plans.
Until, I sat down on my youngest son’s bed side.
Eyes tired, he said, “What song should we sing?”
My heart stopped.
These are precious times, I see them racing in his two older siblings.
His skin and features are untouched from worry, pain or fear.
Earlier this week his sister showed some signs of twelve going on twenty,
mainly with her excuses.
Her mother said to her, “I need you to be a good example.”
I was struck with the difference between need and want.
Who knows the difference?
I’m left thinking, “what song should we sing?”, “what of want and need”, and
“who should be the example”?
With all these thoughts silently shouting in my mind, I opened my lips and gently led us in song.
